Value Systems

Anthropocentrisim:

"To be ethical is to endeavor to find one's proper place in the larger scheme of things rather than to seek to assert human superiority over the natural world.”

Identify the levels at which the value of the environment could be considered. Provide some examples.

The environment can be valued from two standpoints, either on a business level (commodities), or on a intrinsic level (emotional, spiritual appeal). An individual that approaches the environment and sees it through a business or commodity perspective, they are willing to exploit natural resources for their own benefit or societies benefit. An individual that approaches the environment and sees it through a intrinsic perspective, they will feel emotionally or spiritually attracted. For example, if you offer both these individuals a flourishing natural location, the first individual will look for an opportunity to make a profit by building something or using a resource, while the second individual will feel very attracted to nature and will not be willing to manipulate it.

The Green Revolution refers to a time between the 1960s  when development in scientific research and technology in farming led to increased agricultural productivity worldwide. The Club of Rome claimed their publication  Our Common Future) that, within a century, a mixture of human-made pollution and resource and resource depletion would cause widespread population decline. But the intervention of the Green Revolution meant that by 2000, world population had reached 6 billion, and is predicted to rise to nearly 9 billion by 2050.

DDT is an organic pesticide used extensively for many years in farming and in the fight against malaria, a disease prevalent in tropical regions. However, it is thought to be the cause of many health problems in humans and other animals as it accumulates in the red blood cells of the affected organism top carnivores are most at risk from the combined effects of the bioaccumulation and the bio magnification of DDT.

What type of environmental value system emphasizes the need for sustainable management of the environment?
